The mind is a beautiful tool. It collects every information of life experience and stores it as memory data, it also uses logic and past experiences to solve survival problems. The mind’s interpretations are only from what it knows.
The mind clings to the familiar data it has and often resists new ideas or change. The stored beliefs and memories act as an anchor for it. It stays with the past knowledge for protection making it feel like the truth.
Physical suffering or difficult life events are neutral inputs but the mind labels them as bad or unacceptable creating emotional torment. It continues to judge how things should or should not be. It constantly replays past regrets and anticipates future threats, creating suffering over things that do not exist in the present moment.
What we call ‘suffering’ actually stems from how our mind processes reality.
Physical pain is a biological fact but the psychological suffering of misery, agony, and despair tied to that pain is manufactured by the mind’s interpretation, attachments and resistance.
So the mind only knows what it knows and it resists change. But you are not the mind, you are the master of your mind. Become aware, stop your mind from running your life. Thoughts come and go like clouds, they are just mental noise. You cannot get rid of a thought, if you fight the thought it will get louder.
Learn to separate your true self from your thoughts.
Some simple but powerful practices you can do:
1. Stop believing your thoughts. When you stop reacting to every single thought, you take back control.
2. When an irritating event or strong desire occurs, break the thought cycle, take a moment to consciously breathe 3 slow breaths. Be with the breath as it moves in and out of your body.
3. Break the loop of the mind stories about past or future, by quickly focusing your attention on the present moment. Fully place your focus and attention to the chair under you or to the feeling of your feet on the floor or start admiring something you can see.
4. Break the loops of worry and fear by using thankfulness. When the mind starts a negative story, you can interrupt it by intentionally focusing on what is good and what is working right now.
Conscious practice of such simple methods to break the mind loops, frees up mental space for clear thinking and problem solving.
You stop reacting to fear and respond calmly to life situations.
You stop overthinking, you find great answers to problems and you sleep better.
