WALK YOUR WAY TO INSIGHT

-Brain Organization and Its Effect on Daily Life

Stress is a left-brain function. When the left and right hemispheres aren’t cycling properly, we get stuck, and stress arises. But when information flows from the left brain into the right and balance is restored, stress naturally decreases. Walking a labyrinth or tracing a figure eight is a powerful technique to ease stress. It helps shift us out of the stress-dominant part of the brain.

In ancient times, the labyrinth and the infinity symbol were considered sacred. A prayer is often a yearning for change. Those seeking answers would walk the labyrinth or trace the infinity symbol. These practices were seen as spiritual because they sparked new insights, fresh solutions, and moments of euphoria, completely activating both hemispheres of the brain in rapid succession.

When walking a labyrinth or figure eight, you turn left, then sharply right and repeat. This physical movement activates the opposite sides of the brain. Repeatedly engaging both lobes helps unlock solutions. New ideas often arrive in a flash.

Minor injuries like, traumas, illnesses, dental work, surgeries, fevers, sunstroke, can disrupt the brain’s ability to cycle information. Walking the labyrinth or tracing the infinity symbol helps restore flow between the hemispheres.

To receive a new idea and follow through with it, the brain must shift fluidly between left and right. This is how the brain grows, naturally and rhythmically. Even children alternate between right-brain and left-brain dominance from day to day. That’s why balancing study time with play is essential.

When our eyes remain downward due to studying, working, or staring at a phone, we may feel depressed. The brain lacks the stimulation it needs. As a parent, encouraging your child to walk or play with the figure eight can help resolve attitude challenges.

When the hemispheres aren’t working in harmony, it’s harder to find answers from within. Poor cycling also affects physical movement. To be whole, we need both sides of the brain in balance.

You can walk a constructed labyrinth, or draw one on paper and finger-walk it. I’ve shared a link to my previous article on the labyrinth for reference. As for the infinity symbol, you can draw it on the floor and walk it, trace it in the air with your finger, or sit and move your hands or legs as if drawing a horizontal figure eight. I’ve also shared a link to my earlier article on the infinity symbol for further guidance.
