WALKING THE LABYRINTH
A labyrinth is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness. It combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. The Labyrinth represents a journey to our own center and back again out into the world. Labyrinths have been used as spiritual tools nearly 4000 years ago.
Labyrinths can be found in the middle of remote forests, on rocky coastlines and ancient churches.
A labyrinth is an archetype with which we can have a direct spiritual experience.
Walking the labyrinth is a metaphor for life’s journey. It is a symbol that creates a sacred space and place and takes us out of our ego. It connects us to the Divinity within us.
Labyrinths and mazes have often been confused. When most people hear of a labyrinth they think of a maze. A labyrinth is not a maze. A maze is like a puzzle to be solved. It has twists, turns, and blind alleys. It is a left brain task that requires logical, sequential, analytical activity to find the correct path into the maze and out.
But the labyrinth has only one path. The way in is the way out. There are no blind alleys. The path leads you on a circuitous path to the center and out again. A labyrinth is a right brain task. It involves intuition, creativity, and imagery.
At its most basic level the labyrinth is a metaphor for the journey to the center of your deepest self and back out into the world with a broadened understanding of who you are. Walking the labyrinth is a metaphor for spiritual transformation.
If we are not able to visit the places where labyrinths are found, we can draw a labyrinth on a sheet of paper and use it as our personal spiritual tool to help us get to our inner being, our Divine Self. You can walk the labyrinth with your fingers. You can move your fingers through the labyrinth in a meditative state. People who work with the labyrinth say that the best way to trace the labyrinth with a finger from your non-dominant hand, it is because our non-dominant hand has better access to our intuition.
I have found the labyrinth finger walk to be a very calming experience, especially when facing a challenging question the labyrinth has brought inspiring answers.
The diagram of the labyrinth in the picture below is called a 7- circuit labyrinth. I use the 7- circuit labyrinth for my meditation. I consider it to be a spiritual tool and treat it with respect. After I draw the labyrinth I keep it in a safe place so that I can use it during my meditation.
There are many videos on YouTube that teach the method of drawing a 7- circuit labyrinth. So you can also construct your own labyrinth and use this sacred tool to help you connect with your Inner Being.
Blessings!
